Ugo
Carena was born in Ivrea (Italy) in 1944 and graduated
from the Polytechnic of Turin with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He began his professional career in the area of electromechanical
design at Olivetti in 1970. Among other achievements, Carena developed
one of Olivetti’s first electronic calculators, which is
now on display for its particular design at the Museum of Modern
Art in New York. He also contributed to the introduction of the
first worldwide electronic typewriter and many other Olivetti’s
innovative products, including “Quaderno,” the first
subnotebook introduced in the market in 1992.
At the end of the 1970s, Carena initiated a tight cooperation
in product and technology development between Olivetti and SGS,
a predecessor of ST. The close teamwork and successfully executed
projects that resulted from this relationship, such as the large-scale
contract for Smart Power ICs, marked the beginning of the Company’s
long-running and highly successful partner strategy.
In 1997, Carena joined SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics (now STMicroelectronics)
in Geneva as a manager of computer sales in Europe. A year later,
he was appointed to head the newly formed Printer Division. Under
his direction, the division’s total sales more than doubled
in the following five years and the number of customers increased
significantly. Carena also succeeded in intensifying the partnership
with Hewlett-Packard and helped enlarge the printer product portfolio,
opening a new line of digital products based on the most advanced
CMOS technologies with embedded-DRAM features.
In 2003, Carena became Vice President of the Telecom, Peripherals
& Automotive Group and General Manager Computer Peripherals
and Industrial Group. In this position, he contributed substantially
to the development of key Intellectual Property, such as a Read/Write
Channel Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA), as well
as the launch of ST´s Lab-on-Chip platform, the first market-available
biochip for amplifying clinically relevant tiny DNA samples, enabling
faster and more accurate detection of various diseases. .
Following the announcement of organizational changes in September
2004, the Automotive Product Group (APG) has been established
as one of the Company’s product groups, and on January 1st,
2005, Ugo Carena was promoted to Corporate Vice President APG
General Manager.
