Teaming Up for Broadband Cable Access
With cable broadband offering significant opportunities for cable OEMs and cable operators, new classes of services for consumers, ranging from high-speed Internet access to video-on-demand and future home networking are on the horizon.
Paving the way for these new services, ST and Microtune, a leading RF silicon and systems company based in Plano, Texas, are developing a comprehensive Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.1-compliant cable modem reference design. Based on STs STV0396 single-chip cable modem and the Microtunes MicroTuner MT2030 single-chip tuner, MicroStreamer MT1530 upstream amplifier and MT1230 IF Amplifier, the reference design is expected to offer the most cost-effective cable modem system on the market. The joint design will combine highly integrated, high-performance front-end and back-end chips in a complete ready-to-evaluate, customize and produce solution, accelerating the deployment of DOCSIS 1.1-based cable access devices.
ST and Microtune also intend to evolve their joint cable broadband solutions to incorporate next-generation demodulator, tuner and amplifier ICs, providing customers with a migration path to continued cost, power and performance improvements. Both companies will jointly sell and market solutions that result from the relationship. ST and Microtune are also working towards joint programs for other high-growth markets beyond near-term cable modem and set-top box opportunities.
