Full Feature EEPROM in World’s Smallest Package

STMicroelectronics has introduced the first in a new range of serial EEPROMs housed in the SBGA Chip Scale Package. Ideal for all portable consumer goods such as camcorders, digital cameras, cellular phones and pagers where miniaturization is a primary design goal, the M24C16-REA6T offers the smallest package dimensions on the market, with an area of just 3.3mm2 (Equal to the area of the chip) and a height of only 0.7mm.

The SBGA package is ideal for commodity products like small EEPROMs because the assembly of the product is performed at wafer level. The cost of the operation is therefore distributed over the total number of dice on the wafer, typically 4000 for a 6-inch wafer, allowing the devices to be competitively priced. The packaged device is mechanically very robust and is fully compatible with standard Pick and Place equipment, so customers do not have to invest in new machinery. The M24C16-REA6T is also ideal for use in pre-assembled automotive or computer modules, as the SBGA package is more robust than bare die or flip chip.

Built using a very high quality CMOS process, the M24C16-REA6T offers a minimum data retention of 40 years and has a guaranteed read/write endurance of at least one million cycles. The device operates over a 1.8-3.6V power supply range.
