STMicroelectronics to Supply Advanced System-on-Chip Solution for DataPlay Micro-Optical Engine

Leveraging ST's know-how in magnetic and optical drive circuitry, complex chip enables compact, cost effective drives for new small format discs

Geneva, May 31, 2000 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) today announced that the company's system-on-chip technology has been chosen by DataPlay, Inc. to power DataPlay micro-optical engines for DataPlay discs, miniature optical media that can be effectively used with digital music players, electronic books, digital cameras and portable games.

Containing more than seven million transistors, the new chip includes an application specific digital signal processor (DSP) core and an ST10 16-bit microcontroller, plus analog and digital hardware blocks for read channel and servo functions. The chip also includes some functional blocks designed by DataPlay. Designed for 0.25 micron CMOS technology, the device will be packaged in a 233-lead TFBGA package.

"Leveraging ST's traditional strengths in the data storage and consumer electronics sectors, we have designed a system-on-chip solution that enables DataPlay to meet exacting size, cost and consumption constraints," commented Aldo Romano, Corporate Vice-President and General Manager of ST's Telecommunications and Peripherals/Automotive Groups.

In designing the drive system, DataPlay used an ST development platform optimized for the creation of innovative system-on-chip solutions for optical disc applications. The same platform is also used by the Company to develop solutions for DVD drives.

The DataPlay disc is a miniature optical media designed to record and permanently store a vast amount of content of all kinds - whether downloaded from the Internet, pre-recorded or created by consumers. Aimed at applications such as electronic books, digital music players, games and electronic cameras, the DataPlay disc provides an exceptionally compact and inexpensive solution to the problem of storing large quantities of data. DataPlay has also developed ContentKey™, a content enabling e-commerce tool that allows consumers to activate pre-recorded content on a DataPlay disc over the Internet without necessitating a download.

"We are excited to have STMicroelectronics, a world class semiconductor supplier, as a technology partner," said Steve Volk, Chairman and CEO of DataPlay. "ST has state-of-the-art system-on-chip technology that enables us to package our electronics in the small footprint necessary for our micro-optical engine."

ST plans to deliver samples and prototype quantities of the chip to DataPlay in 2000, with volume production scheduled to begin in early 2001.
