Geneva, Switzerland - June 11, 2002 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) announced that its corporate university has received an Excellence Award from Corporate University Xchange for innovation in developing strategic learning alliances. The prize marks the second time ST University has been so distinguished, the first being an Excellence Award for innovative marketing in 1999, which was co-sponsored by Corporate University Xchange and the Financial Times. The award was presented by Mark Allen, Chief Executive Officer of Corporate University Xchange, at a gala ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Lake in Las Vegas on June 9, as part of the Training Directors' Forum 2002 conference. Jeanne Meister, founder of Corporate University Xchange, commented, "This achievement represents further evidence that your learning organization is a true innovator in corporate education, and whose programs and strategies live up to the term 'best-practice'." ST received an honorable mention, the second highest award, for its Masters in Microelectronics and Manufacturing Management program. ST developed the program three years ago at its university headquarters near Aix en Provence in France. Courses are taught by employees of ST and outside partners, as well as by professors from leading European universities and engineering schools. The masters degree itself is delivered by two top French engineering schools: "Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Marseille" (ENSPM) and "Ecole Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Marseille" (ESIM). In accepting the award in Las Vegas, Gerard Stehelin, Executive Director of the Masters in Microelectronics at ST, said, "Our program is original in mixing faculty from academia, ST and other companies, and it was quite a challenge to be the central contact point between the various players and develop a solid and pertinent masters program. It has been quite a rewarding experience, however, and the results have exceeded our expectations. We would like to thank all our partners, and share this honor with them." While ST created the master's program to train its personnel in the high level of technical skills needed for its own operational requirements, customer and partner employees, as well as potential recruits, have also taken part in it. To date, some 30 students from France, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Latvia, Morocco and Russia have completed the master's program, receiving a degree that is recognized by higher education authorities. ST is planning to duplicate the masters program at other STU sites in Italy, Singapore and the United States, in association with other leading universities. "When we won the Corporate University award back in 1999, I mentioned that ST was a pioneer in establishing a corporate university in Europe," commented Alain Dutheil ,ST Corporate Vice President of Strategic Planning and Human Resources. "Since then, many companies have created their universities, but we believe we have distinguished ourselves by opening ours up to the complete value chain, including customers and suppliers. More than ever, we are convinced this has contributed to shared values and strengthened ties with these key partners. This year's award validates our approach. It also validates our commitment to employee education, which we view as key for our company's success. The skills, motivation and dedication of our staff are and will remain a major competitive edge for ST," Alain Dutheil concluded. STU was created in 1994 to reinforce, update and enhance the capabilities of ST's employees. In addition to the Masters in Microelectronics program, STU offers courses in management and personal development, programs for specific jobs, and training in company learning tools and methodologies. The university has a full-time staff of 30 and has trained and certified another 600 in-house "teachers" to "cascade" knowledge and information to the company's 40,000 employees around the world. All ST employees have access to training and education programs, with each employee receiving an average of 55 hours of training per year.
