Offline Switcher from STMicroelectronics Cuts Power-supply Component Count |
||
Geneva, July 4, 2003 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) has introduced
an offline primary power switch for use in applications such as switch-mode
power supplies for DVDs, LCD monitors, set-top boxes, games consoles,
adaptors and general AC-DC converters.The VIPer53 combines an enhanced current-mode PWM controller with a high-voltage MDMesh power MOSFET in a single package. The part has an efficient standby mode, enabled by enhanced pulse skipping, that will help power-supply makers meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations such as those of the Energy Star Program. The VIPer53 also has a number of self-protection mechanisms. Overload and short-circuit faults are controlled by feedback monitoring and a delayed device reset. A high-gain error amplifier provides protection via primary regulation against secondary loop failures. Over-temperature protection is built in, removing the need for an external thermal sensor. Other features include a switching frequency of up to 300KHz, a trimmed voltage reference and current limitation. A current-mode control offers adjustable limitation, soft-start and shutdown control. There is also an auxiliary under-voltage lockout system with hysteresis. And the part can act as a high-voltage start-up current source, reducing the need for external components. The part is available in two packages, DIP-8 or PowerSO-10, which can be run without heatsinks. The DIP-8 version offers a 50W output at European voltage ranges from 195 - 265 V AC. Used with US and wider-ranging voltages of 85 - 265 V AC, the output is 30W. In the PowerSO-10 package the figures are 65W and 40W, respectively.
