New STMicroelectronics Proton Prisma Development Platform Speeds Smart Card Application Development and Deployment

Integrated development kit benefits application developers and card issuers

Geneva, November 17, 2003 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a world leader in delivering smart card chips and solutions, has introduced its Proton Prisma ADK (Application Development Kit) that will create a revolution in the supply of added-value applications in the smart card market.

Application development cycles are usually very long and expensive. This is due to the fact that most smart card operating systems are still very proprietary. Proton Prisma ADK totally removes this barrier for all parties. As such, it creates a competitive and totally open environment for the development of smart card applications.

ST's Proton Prisma ADK dramatically reduces the investment and time required to develop and deploy a new application on to a smart card. This is beneficial for both card issuers and application developers. Application developers use Proton Prisma ADK to create value-add on smart cards without becoming a technical expert and without incurring major upfront infrastructure investments. Proton Prisma ADK contains a simulation of a real-life Proton Prisma card issuing system that is very useful for testing purposes. The application developer can also use it to demonstrate and sell the new application to the many Proton Prisma card issuers worldwide.

Thanks to Proton Prisma ADK, card issuers no longer have to invest in costly multi-application cards to offer loyalty and one-time-password applications to their customers. The fact that applications can be developed and deployed quickly can also be a key differentiating factor for the card issuer. Last but not least, Proton Prisma ADK allows card issuers to consolidate all their cardholder smart card services on the same technology platform.

Proton Prisma ADK has already been successfully used to develop a loyalty application, several one-time-password applications and a PKI-based secure access and digital signature application. Large-scale rollouts are currently in progress. During these experiments, it was proven that the Proton Prisma ADK significantly reduces the time-to-market to add a new attractive application into an operational smart card system. The reason for this success is that Proton Prisma ADK allows the card issuer to deploy any new application without impacting the card issuance infrastructure that is already in use for another critical application, for example, EMV.

STMicroelectronics has introduced a new development environment that significantly reduces the time and cost involved in the development and deployment of new applications on to its Proton Prisma cards. The Proton Prisma ADK is a comprehensive development environment that supports the full range of Proton Prisma cards, from low cost EMV-only (Prisma SP) to high-end JavaCards™ (Prisma DP).

ST's Proton Prisma ADK comprises a set of packages that include architecture documents, interface specifications, user guides, training packages, development tools, software simulators and test tools. It fully supports all the steps required to create a new smart card application: the definition of the architecture, the development and testing of the components, the deployment of the application on the Proton Prisma smart cards, and the management of the application throughout the life cycle of the Prisma smart card. In addition, the Proton Prisma ADK allows application developers to easily integrate the proven cryptography, PIN and key management mechanisms of the Proton Prisma end-to-end security framework into their new applications.

For application developers, the ADK software tools allow new applications to be rapidly developed for marketing to other Proton Prisma licensees within the banking sector. For smart card issuers, ADK allows multiple attractive new applications to be loaded onto the smart cards without introducing any additional complexity to the issuing system. In addition, ADK allows the smart card issuer to standardize cardholder services on the same card.

As well as ST's Proton Prisma standard applications, such as EMV and e-Purse, ADK makes it possible to benefit from all the features offered by the Proton Prisma Technology. These include Data File Management for the development of file-based applications, a Java Virtual Machine for the development, loading and testing of JavaCard™ applets, and the ASPIC toolbox for developing Public Key-based applications.

Supporting both small-scale and large-scale deployments, ADK offers the same standard based framework that is widely implemented throughout the Proton Prisma technology: Global Platform2.1, ISO7816-4, JavaCard2.1 and PKCS. A fully flexible solution, ADK is packaged in the form of deliverable modules by application type (e.g. file-based, Java-based, PK-based) and terminal infrastructure type (offline or online).
