STMicroelectronics' TouchChip Fingerprint Biometrics Suite Protects MPC's Newest Laptops

TransPort T2100 first biometrically-enabled Centrino notebook PC for the US market

Geneva, Switzerland and Nampa, Idaho - May 12, 2003 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) and MPC (formerly MicronPC) today announced that MPC's newest thin and light notebook computers, the TransPort T2100 and T2000, incorporate ST's TouchChip fingerprint BIOS and Data Security. The BIOS Security is controlled by the user's fingerprint and allows the notebook to boot only after the user's fingerprint has been verified. The Data Security allows the contents of the hard disk to be encrypted and grants access to the data with one-touch fingerprint verification. The MPC TransPort T2100 notebook computer is a high-performance, Intel® Centrinoä-enabled laptop, with wireless (802.11b) capabilities while the T2000, which is also wireless ready, is among the lightest Intel® Pentium® 4-M notebooks available.

Integrated into the system's BIOS (Basic Input Output System), the TouchChip fingerprint biometrics provide an unprecedented level of security. The TouchChip Protector Suite software offers several security and convenience features beyond the ability to protect data by fingerprint, including the ability to replace any windows-based or internet password with the touch of a finger. In addition, the Protector Suite software, which operates on standalone notebook computers or workstations, can be upgraded to support central administration for deployment of biometric security solutions at the enterprise level. The TransPort T2100 and T2000 are the latest in MPC's line of very successful Biometric-enabled laptops, which also includes the TransPort X1000 desktop replacement system. All of these notebooks incorporate STMicroelectronics' TouchChip fingerprint sensor technology.

"Mobile professionals carry increasing amounts of valuable corporate and personal data on the hard drives of their notebook computers. MPC's X1000, T2000 and T2100 notebooks, with integrated TouchChip biometrics, provide a secure, last line of defense against the damage that results when those notebooks fall into the wrong hands through theft or loss," according to Alan Kramer, Director of STMicroelectronics' TouchChip Business Unit. "With the growing concern of data theft, the TouchChip is an inexpensive and convenient insurance policy for the modern executive."

"We understand how critical notebook data security is for our government and business customers," said Paul Petersen, MPC's vice president of product marketing and development. "With the TouchChip and Protector Suite woven tightly into the BIOS of these high-performance TransPort notebooks, we've built a virtually impenetrable fortress around their data."

MPC's TransPort notebooks use STMicroelectronics' TCS1CD TouchChip sensor, which is the largest fingerprint biometric sensor on the market. In contrast to more typical integrated circuits, where smaller is often better, the larger fingerprint capture area of ST's sensor provides greater accuracy and fewer false negatives (where the correct user is incorrectly rejected). Despite its size, STMicroelectronics' manufacturing prowess keeps the costs of the total TouchChip hardware and software solution below $30 (in 100K volumes).
