| Affordable, open, and ready-made
HDTV solution to boost the adoption of Digital TV in Japan The platform will be demonstrated for the first time at CEATEC 2005, October 4-8, Makuhari Messe, Chiba, Japan (booth No. 8C37) Geneva/Tokyo, October 3, 2005 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), the world’s leading supplier of MPEG2 decoders1, announced an affordable, ready-to-implement HDTV (High Definition TV) platform for the Japanese market. The solution, jointly developed with BHA Corporation, an innovative supplier of consumer and professional digital video software and hardware solutions, will be demonstrated at CEATEC Japan 2005. The Japanese Government has decided to phase out analog terrestrial TV broadcasts by July, 2011. For the replacement of about 100 million TV sets over the next six years, consumers desire affordable solutions. ST and BHA hope to catalyze the adoption of digital TV in Japan by offering a ready-made, inexpensive solution based on open standards to all TV manufacturers. The new platform is already being integrated in upcoming models at several customers. The platform is composed of ST's powerful HDTV SoC, the STi7710, the highly portable STAPI2 programming interface, along with a jointly developed software stack for processing and displaying of the digital TV signal. The reference platform is fully compliant with the Japanese digital broadcasting standard ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Business). A true HDTV set-top box in a single chip, the STi7710 integrates all the necessary video and audio decoders with a powerful CPU and sophisticated additional features at a very attractive price point. Implementing the solution has further reduced the overall system cost and time-to-market for Digital TV makers, enabling them to build high-quality end products with minimum development efforts. “An independent semiconductor maker and a software maker provide a platform with integrated hardware and software together brings significant values and choices for customers,” said Osamu Takiguchi, Vice President of STMicroelectronics Japan for Consumer & Communication Business Unit, “This market-proven and ready-for-production platform accelerates system development, and gives ST another big step in its contribution to the worldwide adoption of digital TV.” “This platform, which supports 4 different types of digital broadcasting in Japan3, makes it easier for manufacturers to develop integrated digital TV sets and other type of digital broadcasting receiver,” said Masaharu Yoshihara, CEO and president of BHA. “The platform also brings benefits to consumers by speeding up time-to-market of low-cost and high-performance digital TV.” About B.H.A Corporation B.H.A Corporation is a pioneering developer of recording solutions and has supplied Windows and Macintosh recording software for all major optical storage technologies since 1993.
