Local interconnect network (LIN)

LIN is an automotive sub-bus system based on a single-wire serial communications protocol. STMicroelectronics is an associated member of the LIN consortium (www.lin-subbus.org)

ST LIN microcontrollers bring additional features compared to a standard SCI or UART, easing LIN implementation, improving system robustness and minimizing CPU load.
ST7 8-bit microcontrollers embed a dedicated peripheral LINSCI™ peripheral with the following features:
- Compliant with LIN 1.3, LIN 2.0 and LIN 2.1
- Autonomous header handling and MUTE mode
- Advanced LIN errors detection
- Automatic resynchronization, for slave mode operation with internal RC clock source

STM8 8-bit microcontrollers, with LINUART, bring an additional feature:
- Break detection at any time, even during a data-byte reception

SPC 32-bit microcontrollers embed a LINFLEX peripheral features:
- Compliant with LIN 1.3, LIN 2.0 and LIN 2.1
- Message fully buffered by hardware
- Master communication maintained in STOP mode
- Advanced LIN error detection
- Automatic resynchronization, for slave mode operation with internal RC clock source.

To support the design of distributed systems with many intelligent nodes, the LIN standard provides a standardized API (application programming interface) and a software design flow.

ST is providing for free to customers a LIN software package for 8-bit and 32-bit microcontrollers. It has been developed in collaboration with Elektrobit and is fully compliant with LIN 1.3 and 2.0 specifications (authentication certificate). Both J2602 and LIN 2.1 packages are in design phase.
