STM8A Development Tools

The new family of STM8A, 8-bit microcontrollers for automotive applications are supported by a complete range of high-end and low-cost development tools including ST evaluation board, advanced emulation system and in-circuit debugger/programmer.

Free software and firmware are available to help designers get their applications started including, integrated development environment, C compilers (free versions output up to 16 Kbytes of code) and ST firmware libraries (C sources) implementing a range of device peripherals and features.

Programming solutions ranging from low-cost in-circuit programmers to programming systems that are ready to integrate into a production environment are available from ST and third-party tool suppliers.

Evaluation tools

Software and firmware

ST firmware libraries shorten time-to-market by providing documented, tested examples (C sources) implementing STM8 peripheral and feature:

  • Standard firmware library for STM8 – code examples for all standard features and peripherals

Free software toolset provides interfaces for developing and debugging application code and programming it to the target STM8 device. Includes integrated controls for C compilers for STM8:

  • ST MCU Toolset – ST Visual Develop (STVD) easy-to-use IDE with integrated control of C toolsets from Cosmic and Raisonance (supports STICE and RLink), and ST Visual Programmer (STVP) full-featured programming software for in-circuit programming via SWIM interface of an STM8 device on an application board or socket board.

C compilers for STM8 from Cosmic Software and Raisonance can be controlled from STVD integrated development environment and are based on proven technology developed for ST 8-bit microcontrollers. Both will be available in free versions that output code up to 16 Kbytes in size.

Debugging tools

Designers using the ST MCU toolset can take advantage of debugging tools designed to meet every need, from low-cost to the most advanced debugging features:

  • RLink – Low-cost, real-time in-circuit debugger/programmer of ST microcontrollers, from Raisonance
  • STICE – Advanced emulation system for ST microcontrollers with the most extensive range of debugging features including freely configurable advanced breakpoints, execution trace, and code and data coverage and profiling.
