AN2248: Designing
with the STMUX1000L Ethernet Gigabit LAN Switch Application Note
| LAN capability is a common feature for most notebooks/laptops
and docking stations. Some notebooks contain two physical layer
devices (PHY); one PHY is dedicated to the notebook, while the second
one is used for the docking station. However, only one PHY is used
at a time. This redundant circuitry unnecessarily increases the
total system cost and can be replaced with a STMUX1000 LAN switch
without sacrificing signal quality. |
| NEATSwitch STMUX1000 LAN Switch |
Driven by high demand for PHY design optimization, ST has introduced
the STMUX1000, the first LAN switch belonging to the NEATSwitch
family.
The STMUX1000 is an 8-channel single pole double throw (SPDT), 2:1
multiplexer / demultiplexer LAN switch. It supports Gigabit Ethernet
LAN standard data rates and is designed with high bandwidth capability
of up to 450MHz (typ).
In addition to the high bandwidth, this device offers an input/output
capacitance of 7.5pF (typ), low and flat ON resistance of 5.5Ohm
(typ), and a low –40dB (typ) differential crosstalk at 250MHz.
Low and flat RON prevents large signal variation and
degradation across frequencies. This key parameter is critical for
LAN standard data rates for 10 base-T (10Mbps), 100 base-T (100Mbps),
and 1000 base-T (1Gbps) support. |

PHY Optimization in Notebook using STMUX1000 |
| PHY Optimization in Notebook |
| This cost-saving solution is particularly suitable for any application
with a PHY device and two or more RJ-45 connectors. Using the
STMUX1000 LAN switch, signal switching between the RJ-45 connectors
in laptops and docking stations will share the 10/100/1000 base-T
Ethernet physical layer (PHY). |
| PHY Optimization in Compact PCI |
| Besides notebooks, the LAN switch is ideal for server Compact
PCI applications (cPCI). This single LAN switch can replace the
second PHY device required to support additional front panel ports
or backplane connections on the card. With the growing popularity
of Gigabit LAN in server systems, manufacturers can now add connections
with minimal overall system cost increases. |
