High-voltage converters

VIper17ST's VIPer series of offline switch-mode power supplies combines an optimized, high-voltage, vertical power MOSFET with state-of-the-art PWM circuitry. The result is truly innovative AC-to-DC conversion that is simpler, quicker and - with component count halved - less expensive. In addition to benefits such as optimized current mode control and comprehensive built-in protection circuits, the VIPer family represents the easiest solution to comply with the Blue Angel and Energy Star eco norms, with extremely low total power consumption from the mains when the system is in standby mode.

Ultra-low power-supply consumption, less than 50 mW
800 V avalanche ruggedness power section
Limiting current with adjustable current limit set point
Fixed switching frequency (60 kHz or 115 kHz) with jittering features
Adjustable switched frequency up to 300 kHz (VIPer53-E and VIPer53E-E)
Quasi resonant operation for very high efficiency and low EMI (VIPer15)
Overvoltage, over-load and short-circuit protection with auto-restart
Hysteretic thermal shut-down with auto-restart
Brown-out protection for minimum RMS drain current
Extra power timer for extra power capability (VIPer28)

The VIPer17 offline switched-mode converter integrates an 800 V avalanche-rugged MOSFET, as well as numerous features to save external components and ensure efficient operation during standby mode. Constant-current operation with an adjustable set point allows use with all mains voltages using SMPS (switched-mode power supply) designs up to 12 W.

The VIPer12A-E and VIPer22A-E combine a dedicated current-mode PWM controller with high-voltage power MOSFET on the same chip. Typical applications cover offline power supplies for battery chargers, adapters, standby power supplies for TV and monitors, and auxiliary supplies for motor control, for instance. The secondary feedback using an optocoupler driven by a TSM device allows regulation on both the voltage output and current, giving the well-known rectangular (U-I) output characteristic needed for battery chargers.

The VIPer53-E and VIPer53E-E combine an enhanced current-mode PWM controller with a high-voltage MDMesh power MOSFET in the same package. Typical applications cover offline power supplies with secondary power capability ranging up to 30 W in wide-range input voltage or 50 W in single European voltage range in a DIP-8 package, and 40 W in wide-range input voltage or 65 W in single European voltage range in a PowerSo-10 package. The VIPer53-E and VIPer53E-E offer a special feature to handle low-load condition. This consists in reducing the switching frequency by going into burst mode.
