The rapid proliferation of consumer goods and home appliances has meant that something that once had a low environmental impact is now becoming much more significant.

One of the most important concerns is the stand-by consumption when the equipment is not used, but still connected on the mains. ST, taking into account the proliferation of the “Eco Norms”, offers the VIPerX2A devices, which fully comply with the actual codes of conduct for no-load consumption.

The VIPer12A and VIPer22A include an integrated PWM and a Power MOSFET diffused in the same chip thanks to VIPower technology and are able to address low power applications delivering up to 12W in a wide range of condition (85-265VAC).The VIPerx2A family is built to help consumer and appliance manufacturers to design applications able to fully comply with the new Eco Standards, being at the same time cost effective and even smaller and lighter by reducing the component count.

White goods, TVCs, PCs, mobile phones, laptops, cordless drills, digital cameras, MP3 players and an ever increasing range of portable equipment adaptors reduce their stand-by consumption by using this approach; a 3.6W travel adaptor designed with VIPer12A in a flyback configuration with secondary current and voltage regulation has a stand-by input power as low as 100mW (see Application note: AN1484).The devices are also the ideal choice for the non isolated topology, they provide a very low cost power supply by using a simple inductor for specific applications where no galvanic isolation is required.
