STM140x: Additional Information

There are different levels of security certification depending on the system application. As an example, the FEDERAL INFORMATION PROCESSING STANDARDS (FIPS-140) publication provides a standard used by Federal organizations when these organizations specify that cryptographic-based security systems are to be used to provide protection for sensitive data. There are many other country-specific and industry-specific standards that POS system vendors need to meet. The STM140x family has been defined and architected to meet most, if not all, of these standards for physical and environmental tamper detection.

STM1403/04 Features and Benefits
Internal monitoring of Vcc (primary voltage) with switchover to Vbat (back-up battery)

RESET output (/RST) when Vcc drops below customer specified, factory programmed “power fail detect” (Vpfd) threshold
Low battery voltage signal (/BLD) indicate if battery is good either prior to or after encapsulation
Tamper Detection and Security Alarm (/SAL, Open Drain)

4 independent high impedance physical tamper inputs (TP1-4) with built-in glitch immunity
Continuous monitoring of Supply Voltage (Vcc or Vbat) level, over or under operating voltage levels trigger alarm
Built in temperature sensor to monitor temperature, over and under temperature alarm trigger levels are factory-programmed (on STM1404 only)
/SAL is issued if any one of the above tamper conditions are triggered
Low Current (Ibat) in battery backup (Vbat) mode (targets only)

STM1403: 3.0mA (typ)
STM1404: 5.5mA (typ, at ambient temperature and 3.6V); 9.0mA (max) with continuous monitoring of Vcc, temperature and physical tamper pins (TPx)
Manual Reset (/MR) input provided (similar to the STM704 Supervisor)

PFI, /PFO (Open Drain, Active Low Output) provided to monitor any other voltage
Reference Voltage (Option on the STM1403A and STM1404A)

Vref of 1.237V provided on separate pin with Isource: 25mA (typ)
Can be used as a reference to an ADC or as a source for a random noise generator
Product available in extended 3.0V ranges (2.2V to 3.6V)
