| To guarantee continuous technological development and to provide
more effective silicon solutions for our customers, ST invests a
significant proportion of its sales in advanced R&D activities.
We have design centers for the development of Smartcard products
in Europe, Asia and the United States and we play a prominent role
in numerous European Community research programs, such as Medea+.
ST's renowned System-on-Chip expertise provides
Smartcard devices with a wealth of technology, design and test
methodology, memory and connectivity options. These will be integrated
into our Smartcard ICs of the future.

The principal design center and advanced manufacturing
facility for ST Smartcard products is based in Rousset (France).
Featuring a state-of-the-art, 8-inch fab that uses deep submicron
technology, this plant is ideally suited to the production of
the latest generations of Smartcard devices. ST also produces
Smartcard ICs at its 8-inch fab in Catania (Italy) and on its
6-inch lines in Rousset and Agrate (Italy).
Our high-security volume production lines in Casablanca
(Morocco) ensure reliable assembly and test of ST micromodules.
