New IGBT Family For High Speed Motor Control
The K family represents the state-of-the-art of the new ultra-fast short circuit proof IGBT for motor controls. The trade-off between voltage drop (VCE(sat)), switching speed (tfall) and overall power losses has been optimized for a range of frequencies between 9kHz and 25kHz.

The brand new series of tailored high speed, low reverse recovery charge (Qrr) free-wheeling diodes will bring a higher level of performance in working conditions, reducing EMI and current spikes.

Dedicated Parts For Motor Control
The new parts have been developed and optimized for motor control equipment and high frequency inverters where short circuit protection is necessary. The short circuit withstand time is 10µs, as expecteded by market requirements. The interesting behaviour of these devices, witnessed by the forward characteristics, is due to the choice of the ideal trade-off between the speed and the voltage drop of the device.

This trade-off has been targeted considering modern control systems where the frequency is higher than in the past but the efficiency must reach an excellence value, in order to reduce acoustic and energy pollution both for industrial and home appliances.

The K family represents the first tangible step towards increasing ST’s IGBT product portfolio with the precise target of becoming a world leader also with this power switch component just as ST is now recognized to be with Power MOSFETs and Bipolars.
