Low Voltage MOSFETs For OR-ing Applications

In telecom network and server infrastructures the main requirement is highly reliable power supplies. For this reason, reduction in power supply stresses is of paramount importance because an increase in the system component temperature directly affects failure rate. In order to reduce component temperature and ensure reliable bus voltage, parallel-connected power supplies are employed, with redundant power capability. This assures uninterrupted power to the load if one or more power supplies fail. A possible OR-ing system is depicted below. OR-ing MOSFETs

Using a low forward voltage and fast switching Schottky diodes still produces unacceptable losses for very high efficiency systems, when the load current is high.

Features

The main features needed for MOSFETs in OR-ing applications are:
Very low On-Resistance
High current capability
High power handling
