SuperMESH “NK” Series In PDPs
Medium Voltage Devices For Plasma TVs

STY60NK30Z Product Page
ST is addressing the rapidly growing PDP market with a new family of MOSFET products. The very low on resistance of the NK series of SuperMESH devices makes them ideal for plasma TV applications.

STY60NK30Z in Max247 (Product Page)
The STY60NK30Z, is the first 300V MOSFET with a maximum on-resistance of 45mOhm, housed in a Max247 package, which exploits a lower thermal resistance junction-case and junction-ambient, allowing greater pwer dissipation compared to the closest TO-247 package or competitions’ closest equivalents.

Thanks to SuperMESH, we are able to exploit the best compromise between BVDSS, RDS(on) and more significantly the cost of the device. The following table compares ST's device against competition.

The table above clearly shows the superior performance offered by ST’s device. This significant difference is achieved thanks to the excellent connection between BVDSS / ID/ RDS(on) that the NK series provides as the best trade-off.

This important compromise is strongly related to the driving techniques applied, which allow the
perception of the image on the screen of the PDP TVs.

The image on the screen, is nothing more than millions of pixels illuminating. This process or technique, is obtained by applying a high voltage to the column and line electrodes, which are placed between the glass panels of the screen, causing a discharge in the plasma gas, which will consequently excite the coloured phosphors (which are placed long the column
electrodes) releasing the visual perception of the image.
A complex MOSFET parallel configuration to drastically decrease the on-resistance is needed by the system. This provides an alternate square high voltage, giving current peaks at each edge, that are used to sustain each single discharge.
In the diagram the configuration of the two columns and line drivers can be seen, which is the future trend of the PDP TV, integrating the MOSFET dice.
