AN2347 Application note
Getting started with STw8009 and STw8019
The typical application of STw80x9 Mobile Video DENC needs only a few extra components that can reduce the total components area size down to 14 mm˛ when in CVBS mode. Depending on the PCB process and assembly flow, the final application footprint can be optimized to save space in portable multimedia equipments.
Naming convention
Unless specified, the STw8009 and STw8019 part numbers are refered to as STw80x9.

Starting the STw80x9
The device needs to be supplied with power in the following order: Vdig_IO, Vcore and V_analog. The power-up sequence is hardware controlled using three signals: CLK, PORn and Suspend. Both PORn and Suspend must be set to high state. CLK is a 27 MHz clock to be applied first to the STw80x9, before handling any other control input. In case the PLL generates 27 MHz, some delay is necessary prior to starting the device. The power on reset action then applies a typical 10 ms low state on the PORn input. To set the STw80x9 in active mode, the Suspend input has to be forced to low level, basically 5 ms after rising edge of PORn. Figure 1. STw80x9 starting sequence

Along next sequences, STw80x9 I2C addresses are 40h (write) and 41h (read) when the added input is grounded, or 42h and 43h if tied to Vdig_IO.
Sequence to display the internal STw80x9 color bar pattern in NTSC mode

Sequence to display external CCIR data (digital YCbCr 4:2:2 out of processor)
write 20h @ address 5Fh write 02h @ address 83h write 00h @ address 80h write 30h @ address 08h write 8Ah @ address 00h CVBS video format output choice DAC#2 powered on set both DACs in active mode 4:2:2 input enabled NTSC selected
Some wait state can be included between each write cycle, typically 1 to 10ms. In this case, CCIR inputs of STw80x9 must be handled by a processor in NTSC (525 lines) compliant with 4:2:2, as recalled hereafter (one line description): ... ... The STw80x9 video analog output stability requires that the 27 MHz clock is +/-30ppm accurate to garantee the compatibility with all video display systems such as TV sets and monitoring units. 244 bytes (line sync, color burst), including SAV (4 bytes for Start of Active Video) 1440 bytes (multiplexed video Cb Y Cr Y, 720 bytes for luma and 2 times 360 bytes for chroma) 32 bytes (blanking), including EAV (4 bytes for End of Active Video)

The optional filters are used to remove the "useless signal". In the absence of filter, the "useless signal" goes to the TV-set and can create high frequency artifacts in the "useful signal" depending on the TV set.
4.1
Impact on TV set when no filter on the outputs of STw80x9
Having no filter with an analog TV set has no impact since analog systems filter the high frequency by default. Having no filter with a digital TV set can lead to the rejection of the "useless signal" inside the "useful signal" due to sampling. However, most digital TV have an internal low-pass filter that acts before sampling and rejects the "useless signal".
4.2
Trials
There is no difference with or without filter on STw80x9 when using an analog TV. There is no difference with or without filter on STw80x9 when using a digital TV set equipped with internal filter, which is a normal case with digital TV.

Optional filters
AN2347
Some slight beating can be seen on some colors with test pattern when using the STw80x9 with an digital TV without internal filter. Thus, image quality is a little bit impacted.
4.3
Conclusion
With usual TV, there is no difference with or without filter on STW8009. The only possible difference may occur with digital TV without internal filter. TV set without internal filter is quite improbable. If this kind of TV exists, it is very marginal. All branded TV sets include internal filters. Thus, STW8009 provides a very good image quality whatever there are filters or not on the outputs.
